Believe in Love

What is Love? How important is it? Here is what Chapter 13 of the book of Corinthians has to say about love:

1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Love is a wonderful thing! We’re told it’s all that we need. And it is! But how can we tap into this power? Especially if we’ve already tried and been hurt? A lot of people have lost trust in love and just can’t seem to believe it is real.

People can let us down. They can disappoint us, hurt us, abuse us. But this isn’t love. What is true love? God is Love! Unconditionally present and good all the time. THIS is what we need to place our trust in! Trust that the universal principal of Love will heal.  When we love unconditionally, we are expressing our true oneness with God.

Knowing in our head the meaning of love may seem easy, but knowing it in our heart can sometimes be a little more of a challenge.  How do we develop trust?  How do we express love in our lives and how do we let it into our heart?  Here are a few practices that I have found helpful with this.  These practices will help make it real!

  • Go out of your way to good for another. Ask if there’s some way you can help.
  • Practice giving in secret.
  • Volunteer at a homeless shelter, food cupboard, animal shelter, nursing home, church, hospital, etc.
  • Practice forgiveness, including forgiving yourself.
  • Pray for those you resent.
  • Spend quality time with your family.
  • Visit extended family.
  • Visit shut-ins.
  • Practice active listening.
  • Put yourself in others’ shoes.
  • Send thank you notes, get well notes, notes of encouragement.
  • Look for the goodness in others and in yourself.
  • Look for the goodness and order in nature, realizing this same goodness and order is also in you.
  • Look in the mirror every morning and say, “I love you!”
  • Before speaking or acting, ask yourself what Love would do.
  • Keep a log of love you see expressed in the world.
  • Make a gratitude list and keep it going!
  • Make a vision board showing pictures of love.
  • Spend time with children and animals. They know how to love unconditionally. Allow them to teach you.
  • Interview an elderly person on the topic of love. (Pick someone happy!)
  • If you love someone, tell them. Often. Tell them why, too. What do you love about them?
  • Make a list of everything you love about life.
  • Make a list of everything you love about YOU.Do nice things for yourself. Give yourself a treat once in awhile!
  • Take good care of yourself. Really. Eat healthy foods, get plenty of rest, drink lots of water, spend the time and money you need on yourself for self-care.
  • Find someone positive to talk to and share your problems. Make sure it is someone who will help lift you up. A friend, a sponsor, a minister, a counselor, your mom…someone who will listen without judging and who will help you make lemonade from the lemons of life.
  • Speak of yourself and others only in positive ways.
  • Honor commitments to yourself and others.
  • Bring to mind someone you have loved unconditionally or who has loved you in this way. Close your eyes and bask in the feeling. Carry it with you into the world.
  • God is Love. We are made in the image of Love. Love is what’s natural to us. Everything else is a diversion. Allow your love light to shine!

Over time, you will find love when following the suggestions above. You will find it everywhere…in every person, every animal and throughout all of life. Allow it to grow in your heart. Fake it ’til you make it! It’s there! Over time you’ll come to trust. Guaranteed! You’ll come to an understand of love which cannot be denied. Love is all that is real!
